    Hey Everyone!

I hope everyone's week is going well.  Me?  I can't complain.  Oh wait - I did complain once.  Our Price Chopper grocery store sure got a good lesson about everything being so automated.  Because of the BBQ and busy weekend I didn't get all my grocery shopping done, so I dragged my sorry self to the grocery store.  Monday evenings are not my best "out and about times".

I had just about finished getting what I needed and was ready to head to the checkout when they announced "We're sorry for the inconvenience, but at this time Price Chopper cannot process checks, as our automated system (or some such thing) is down".  I'm thinking uh oh - surely they really don't mean it.  That really isn't meant for me.  They can still take checks with ID right?  I mean I even have a Price Chopper card.  They know me here."  I spend mounds of money in this place.  How can they not know me personally.  So I continued on my merry way, stopping to grab a few forgotten items.  Upon arriving at the checkout - I was met with ALOT of people on long lines.  Hmm -- what's up.  The voice then once again announced the problem, this time adding that credit cards couldn't be taken either.  Hey - I wasn't planning on putting my groceries on my credit card.  They know me -- they will take my check with ID.  I waited in a pretty short line considering the others.  Cashiers were directing everyone with cash to other lines.  No one knew whether to stay in line, or start putting things back.  Me?  No way am I putting anything back.  Can I hide the cart and leave.  Embarrassed  But I NEEDED my groceries and no way did I want to go to another store and do this all over again.  Not to mention the sales....none of this stuff was on sale anywhere else.  I specifically go here just for the great sale stuff.  You know Buy one - Get One?  The other stuff I go to another store where it's cheaper.  Now who (certainly not me) carries at least $100 dollars in cash at all times?
It ended up I had to put my groceries on my credit card (which I've never, ever done before).  They processed that the old fashioned way by having you sign the slip and all.  The place was a madhouse with employess running around clueless and people yelling.  Whew -- glad I got out of there.

Not much else is happening.  I need to get out and plant my burgandy colored mums in the front tonight and gather some stuff from the basement for the trash night tomorrow.  Otherwise I can curl up and read tonight after dinner.  I bought J.D. Robb's newest "Innocent in Death".  Just as I started reading it, I realized I had zipped through the one before so fast that I was having trouble remembering certain characters mentioned in the new one.  So.......I'm re-reading the other "Born In Death"... No problem - - I love to read and I love these characters anyway.  The main character reminds me of my friend Jane abit.  HI JANE!!!!!

I went to Cindi's and filled out my football guesses.  I cannot believe I came in last on week 3.  Must have been off my game...  (off my game -- get it??).  Yeah I know.  I'm a dork.  Right Cindi?

I'm looking forward to this weekend.  Jaime is coming home Sunday for his 28th birthday Surprised  That means another BBQ.  We had fun last year.  It's so great to see my kids all together in one place, even if it is just for a day.   I'm dreading the Christmas one of them is missing.  Crying  I know it's coming - but not soon I hope.

Ok - rambling done and over.  I'd better get to work.  I hope the rest of you have a great week!

    There's some tagging going on...

The weekend sure did go fast and I even had Friday off.

Nikki and I had a wonderful time shopping Friday. We had lunch at 99 Diner.  Eric ate grilled cheese and had fun rolling the crayons around (he did throw them up in the air once and startled 2 ladies sitting behind us  -- oops!  They were good sports though and we made sure Eric kept the crayons on the table after that.  Nik and I had the Sirloin with fully loaded mashed pototaoes and veggies.  We were so stuffed afterwards we finished our shopping and headed home.  Eric fell asleep before we even left the mall parking lot.  We ladies just wore him out.

Anyway - I just wanted to pop in and say hello.  It's a busy Monday here at work and I'm hoping to get up early tomorrow morning and have some quiet time to get on here.  Right now though it's best if I just do some visiting in between my work to see what I've missed.  OH!  and thanks to everyone who sent Nik birthday wishes -- Yes Jane there was cake.  Cheese Cake as that's Nik's favorite.  Tongue out

Take care all -- I'll be back!

I'M BACK!!  My that was quick.  Well I just was informed that I've been tagged so here goes.

    I've been tagged by Theresa

THE RULES OF THE TAG ARE:
Each person posts the rules before their list, then list 8 things about themselves.
At the end of the post, that person tags and links to 8 other people
and then visits those people's spaces and comments letting them
know that they have been tagged, and to come and read the post,
so they know what they have to do.

    HERE IS MY LIST:

    1. I love to read and can read an average paperback in one evening.
    2.  I am a proud veteran of the US Navy.
    3.  I was able to board a nuclear submarine and get a tour.
    4.  I met my friend Melissa from Spaces in Flordia this past summer.
    5.  If I had the chance I would live in a beach hut on the beach - although a beach cottage would be nicer.
    6.  I once managed 3 T-Shirt Boutiques in San Diego for about 5 years.   I loved it.
    7.  I like Classic Rock and Country Music
    8.  I am the proud mom of 4 children and grandmom of 3
OK...now my turn to tag some other folks...

Ok - I have to get back to work so I am going to have to cheat and only do 4 tags.  Geez I'm not very interesting am I?  I know I could have done better if I had more time....

    Stuff

My new issue of Coastal Living Magazine came yesterday, so I have visions of beaches and beach houses dancing in my head.  Oh I wish I could be lucky enough to have a beach cottage.  Maybe I'll start playing the lottery again - Hey you never know.

The days are still chilly, but its supposed to warm up for the weekend by Friday.  A little warmer each day.  Saturday is supposed to be 89.  Thank heaven -- I was worried we had an early fall.  There were leaves in the pool this week.

That means it will warm up nicely for the BBQ we re having for Nikki's birthday on Saturday.  Not that I know how much to cook because I have no idea how many people will be here.  My husband invites everyone we see, who says "yeah, maybe I'll stop by.  Oh by the way, who is Nikki?"   LOL!  No really -- he mentioned two people might come that I never heard of.  Someone from his bowling league.  When I ask Nikki who she invited she says "everybody plus whoever you guys invited".... yeah that helps.  So I guess I'll just have to wing it.  We will just have BBQ leftovers for dinner all next week - and nobody, I MEAN NOBODY, better complain.

My oldest son Jaime came up from NYC with his best friend Jimmy last weekend.  That was a nice surprise.  I think I saw him for 20 minutes on Saturday and another 20 minutes on Sunday.  He came up mostly to go to the track (he said it was umbrella giveaway day and he needed one).  What a clown.  Anyway, he borrowed my car because Jimmy (who is newly engaged by the way) was spending some time with his girl and Jaime wanted to visit friends here.  He did however fill the tank to full, wash the car, cleaned the windows and vacuumed it out.  He did take a minute to call me afterwords to tell me that the car was so excited to have a full tank of gas that it wasn't running right.  Clown.

Well it's time to get ready for work and I have to quickly go back to Jane's space.  She was on a rant on one of her blogs -- something about opinions and not commenting on blogs.  It was so early this morning when I read it and my brain was just laying there doing not much so I didn't comment.  Now I can't stop thinking she will see I was there and didn't comment and start another argument with herself.  Can't have that -- it will bother me all day.

Take care all -- and I'll let you know how the lottery turns out.

I have to share this -- I've heard it before but I still laugh at it.

A new priest at his first mass was so nervous he could hardly speak.  After mass he asked the monsignor how he had done.

The monsignor replied, “When I am worried about getting nervous on the pulpit, I put a glass of vodka next to the water glass. If I start to get nervous, I take a sip.”

So next Sunday he took the monsignor’s advice.  At the beginning of the sermon, he got nervous and took a drink.

He proceeded to talk up a storm.

Upon his return to his office after the mass, he found the following note on the door:

    1)  Sip the vodka, don’t gulp.

    2) There are 10 commandments, not 12.

    3) There are 12 disciples, not 10.

    4) Jesus was consecrated, not constipated.

    5) Jacob wagered his donkey, he did not bet his ass.

    6) We do not refer to Jesus Christ as the late J.C.

    7) The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are not referred to as Daddy, Junior and the spook.

    8) David slew Goliath; he did not kick the shit out of him.

    9) When David was hit by a rock and was knocked off his donkey, don’t say he was stoned off his ass.

10)We do not refer to the cross as the “Big T.”

11)When Jesus broke the bread at the last supper he said, “Take this and eat it for it is my body.” He did not say “Eat me”.

12)The Virgin Mary is not called “Mary with the Cherry”.

13)The recommended grace before a meal is not: Rub-A-Dub-Dub thanks for the grub, Yeah God.

14)Next Sunday there will be a taffy pulling contest at St. Peter’s not a peter pulling contest at St. Taffy’s.

    Toyboxes, Birthdays and Missing Calendars

It's a chilly Saturday morning here in Upstate NY - I sure do hope it gets a little warmer.  Is it me or do summers seem to get shorter and shorter each year.  Fall is in the air and I really don't feel like I've fully lived my summer.  It's passed by so quickly.  I NEED MORE TIME!

I thought I'd join you this morning with my cup of coffee.  Daniel just left for work and the rest of the house is still asleep.  I don't have a show and tell this morning, as the week has been so busy I didn't have time to think of one, let alone write it.  There are so many special things in my life.  Doing the show and tells helps me to remember that I do have a good life - especially when I am stressed and feel like jumping in the car and driving away from it all.  I'm still looking for that darn wedding album so you can all see some funny pictures.  Maybe I'll find it this weekend.

Nik and I are going to repaint the toybox that my father in law made for Nikki and Charlie some 15  years ago.  When they outgrew it, I was going to sand and stain it and use it for a chest at the end of my bed.  I've spent the last 5 or so years listening to Kevin nag me about the space it (among other things) takes up in the garage.   Nikki asked me if we could redo it for Eric's room.  I like that idea.  Maybe after Eric outgrows it, Charlie will have matured from the irresponsible teenager he is (don't get me started on that one) and have a family of his own to hand it down to.   It's so well built and sturdy I know it will last.  HEY!  That might not be a show, but isn't it a tell?  Does that count Michelle?

Nikki's birthday is this coming Friday, the 24th, so I've taken off from work and we will have another of our girl days.  I can hardly believe she is 20.  I was just looking around for a calendar - damn I have no calendar?  I believe Jaime's birthday falls on Labor Day this year and he will be 28.  He was born on Labor day in 1979 -- how appropriate huh?  His birthday is the 3rd of September.  Where the heck are my calendars?  Damn calendar thieves......

Well, I'm not doing so hot at Cindi's Football pool this week.  Last week I came in second -- this week I've already lost 3 and there are still more games to go.  Loyal person that I am I always take Kansas City in her honor and they have lost both weeks.  Ummm -- what's up there Cindi ?

Well, I need a second (or is this the third) cup of coffee - so I'll stop my rambling and get it and do some visiting.  All of you have a great weekend!

    Numbers, Numbers Everywhere!

It's early Wednesday morning and I'm up before the alarm again.  I've been here a few tmes trying to update, but honestly my mind automatically blanks out lately and I can't come up with a darn thing to say.  Oh well, guess I'll just ramble away.

Work has been so busy lately as the Accountant is coming on Thursday to gather info to start our "end of the year" close out which is at the end of September.  I can hardly believe it's here already.  Doing bank statements is hard where I work because with our accounting program we can only change months if there is one user in the system.  Now with 5 of us using it, that's not an easy task.  I spend alot of time running around to tell everyone to back out for a bit.  I've tried telling them to close out after they use it, as I do understand they need to use it.  But they forget all the time.  My mistake I guess is that I save them to do a few at a time because I hate the hassle of getting everyone out, and because I hate doing them period.   It's days like the last two that I want to go home and spread the want ads out on the table and see what new kind of career I can do.  I'm probably up early this morning because I'm tired of dreaming of numbers.

The weekend was nice, but pretty uneventful.  We did chores and shopping.  The pool was too cold because of all the rain on Thursday and Friday, but we did spend some time in the yard and since Eric has his little pool he didin't suffer too much.

Kevin tried to change the fuel filter on the Explorer because it isn't running right.  We are hoping it is that, rather than the fuel injectors ($$$).  Unfortunately he is unable to get the filter off.  I took him Sunday morning to the car part place and when he came out he said the guy tried to get him to buy some tool to take the filter off with.  Man that he is of course, he doesn't need it.  I told him he should get it just in case (I know how things go when he works on the vehicles).  So last night after work, we stopped at the car part place to get the tool. Eye-rolling

Other than that my friends life is just plodding along. I'm going to go over the finances tonight to see if I can scrape up enough cash to get us all a day at Great Escape in Lake George on Labor Day weekend. (Damn there I go with the numbers and finances again).  But it must be done.  Hmmm I hope the Explorer is fixed by then as I can't figure out how we will get there in my little Elantra.

I'm off to see how good I did at Cindi's football contest and to say hello to you before I have to go back to the Number Mill this morning.  Have a great day!

    Saturday Show and Tell

Over the years I've been a parent, I have received way more than my share of gifts from my children.  Birthday, Christmas, Valentines Day and so on.  When they were little, the gifts my children made were full of love and pride and they meant the world to me.  There are two gifts that stand out in my mind that I would like to tell you about.  One I have a picture of and the other item is tucked away with some momentos in my basement that I would need to dig out.  Trust me, if you seen all the things in the basement you'd understand why I can't put myself through that. The only reason I have the other is because it has followed me from one desk to this desk at my present job.

I'm sure you all remember M.C. Hammer who sang the song "Can't Touch This".  Now mind you I'm not a huge fan of rap music, but I liked that song.  It was a good song to "bop" to.  You all know what bopping is I'm assuming.  Just kind of moving your head and shoulders to the music.  Now I am a great bopper.  I bop when I'm doing the dishes, when I'm driving, sitting at my desk, cleaning the bathtub, -- well, you get it.  Most of the time.  And I loved that song to bop to.  Sometimes even my hips got going on that one.

My kids collected trading cards.  My oldest son Jaime collected Hockey cards and Little Kevin collected Baseball cards.  One day Little Kevin (he was about 10) came running to me all excited.  Ma - guess what - I got you something.  Turns out my little sweetie had traded a few of his baseball cards for an M.C. Hammer trading card.  My heart just melted.

And on my 39th birthday Jaime (he was 14 at the time) gave me my sand dollar you see below.  He went shopping at the mall with his allowance and found it.  He said he knew it was the perfect thing.  I can still see him standing just as proud as a peacock, knowing I would love it.  And he was right.

If you are wondering why these two gifts are two of the most precious the explanation is easy.  My two boys were finally seeing their mom as a person.  Not just someone who made their lives paradise on some days or hell on the others, but as a person in her own right.  That I love music I can "bop" to -- (I never knew Kevin paid that much attention to things I did automatically for my own enjoyment.  Or to who my particular favorites were).  Someone who loves all things ocean - Sand dollars, lighthouses, etc.  (I never knew Jaime noticed how, when I went to the mall those certain things would catch my eye).

Saturday Show and tell is about special things or people in our lives and I love doing it so I can share those things and people that are special to me with all of you!  Have an awesome weekend everyone!

    Tornado in Brooklyn??

Well, that had me in a panic.  Jaime works in Manhatten, but lives in Brooklyn.  I called him when I saw it on the news last night. I don't know what I would have done if he didn't answer.  Well, it wouldn't be the first sleepless night I've had over my kids.  Anyway I finally reached him and he didn't even know about it.  He was at some restaurant in Manhatten with some friends.  Same friends he shares his apartment in Brooklyn with.  They didn't know about it either.  I wonder if he still has a house standing to head home to.  He has to be in work in Manhatten at 6 am so he leaves Brooklyn in the wee hours (or he might stay at a friends in Manhatten).  Anyway as long as he was ok I can be calm.  But I'm still waiting to hear from him to see if it was in the area he lived.  He gets mad at me cause I worry so much about him.  Oh well - too bad.  He'll be 70 and I'll still worry.  Oh - wait, I might not be around then.

Let's see - Oh I did get my stove.  A nice shiny, new, white one.  It looks so nice.  Too bad it puts the focus now on the avacado green linoleum floor.  That's next!  I haven't used the stove yet, but we will remedy that situation tonight.  It has been too hot to cook inside anyway so we've been using the grill.  Today is much cooler, and tomorrow is only supposed to be 69 and rainy.

So I don't think I told all of you that I had my hair all cut off on Saturday morning.  Nik and I took Eric for a haircut and I got mine done as well.  I told the woman I wanted a boy haircut and someone finally listened.  Picture Annie Lennox -- mine I think is shorter.   Surprised  Yes, really!

    Tuesday

Yesterday was so busy I didn't  get a chance to vist or update.  Today isn't too bad.  More steady than overwhelming.

Well after work today I'm hitting the pavement to shop for a new stove.  Ours is near the end of it's usefulness not to mention the fact that it is Avacado green.  Embarrassed  Hey - it came with the house 11 years ago.  Anyway, one of the burners started popping the other day and scared me half to death.  Good thing it's summer and we use the grill most of the time.

I don't know if  you know that I'm not particularly fond of cooking.  I do it and I do it well (for the most part).  Maybe it's because after all these years of cooking dinner mostly every night, I have burned out.  I've run out of menus and idea's.  Kind of like grocery shopping.  It's one of those things for me that has to be done, but I'd rather be doing something else.  Anyway, spending money on a stove is not my idea of excitement.  It's been a long time since I've shopped for an appliance.  I prefer gas stoves, but we never got around to converting our electric stove to gas, and now that we will be selling soon, I'd rather use the money to do that elsewhere.  So I'm shopping for an Electric Stove.  I don't need fancy....I'm not into bells and whistles.  I just want the knobs and the door and burners to be in the proper place and it has to be white.  I'll be a happy camper.  We'll see how it goes.  Oh -- and inexpensive....that also.

Not much is new.  We had a wonderful time with my sister and the kids on Sunday.  The weather was perfect and no one had to do any cooking.  Sis brought a huge sub platter, I picked up some Popeye's Chicken and made 2 salads (and one came free with the platter- whoo hoo).  We spent alot of time in the pool and the girls had a ball with their grandma.  It was wonderful to see my sister again.

Continuted -- I'm back from Lunch now.

Well - lunch is over.  I really must listen to myself when I say "Deb, do not go to the grocery store on your lunchtime.  Only the ladies that cannot make up their mind, or all the ladies that want to know what is in each salad, or all the men who are really not sure if they want a half a pound or maybe just 4 slices are at the deli counter are there.  One lady wanted to know if the potato salad was made with mayo or oil.  Umm -- I'm seeing white creamy stuff - I think it must be mayonaise.  And I didn't know Potato Salad could be made with oil.  But then again remember I'm no cook.  Anyway - I'm back from the store and very aggravated.  Never again!  But - now I don't have to stop after work.  Way Too Happy
Oh but darn - I do have to do the stove.   Indifference

    My Friendship Coin:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

(I had to take a picture of it on the forklift (LOL) as it is shiny silver and the glare made it unrecognizable when the flash went off.  The forklift was the only thing in the shade that I had to use)...

I was raised in Jersey City, NJ and one day when I was about 7 years old, I was walking to the store which was at the next corner from where we lived.  As I walked by a particular house with a gate, I heard a little voice "girly, you dropped some pennies" -- and turned to see a girl my age standing behind the gate.  She helped me gather them up and walked me to the store.  We became inseparable right from there.  We insisted our families had to meet and they did, becoming friends with each other as well.  Her name was Cathy (she now spells it Kathie).  As time went on we met Diane, Anita and Jeanne and all five of us stuck together.  Meeting that little girl behind the gate was over 40 years ago - and the beginning of a strong friendship between all of us, that has endured to this very day.  I remember our school days, carnivals, hanging out in the park or Belvedere Court, elephant pants (anyone remember those?), sleepovers, Communion, Confirmation, 8th grade graduation, trips to Seaside Heights, NJ (both Kathie's and my parents owned a summer home in Toms River), stopping at Carival Ice-cream during the trip, go carts and sneaking into the drive-in by the back road.  I could go on and on with the memories.

It all changed when I was 14.  My mom passed away and after completing my freshman year in high school I was moved to Upstate NY to live with an aunt.  My mom's loss would have been unendurable had it not been for my friends.  My mother has been gone many years, but when I am with them she comes alive to me again as we remember old times and they all knew her well.  It's hard nowadays, as I have no one to talk to that knew her when she was alive.  Our friendship continued with the girls coming upstate during vacations.

As the years have passed we all have moved in different directions, I went into the Navy, and the girls married and began to have families,  but we have never lost touch.

I have many pictures of us over the years, including our combined family vacation in Dewey Beach, Delaware.  Some at Jeannie's house down the shore, and some when they came here to visit one November, etc.  Below you will see in the first photo, 4 of us.  Diane is taking the picture at Kathie's house on a trip I made home from California.  I don't think I have an early picture of all five of us, as one of us was always taking the picture.   Oh how young we were.

And the second photo is at Anita's wedding 3 or 4 years ago.   We managed to stay out of trouble then, but oh did we dance!

The last was taken last November on our Fabulous 50's trip to Cancun.  Could we really be 50??  Geez...actually we are now turning 51 this year.  Disappointed  Now that was some trip.  We will be hard pressed to top it.

We each received the coin you see above on that trip and we carry it with us always.  These girls are close to my heart and I am honored to be a part of such a wonderful, loving friendship.
