27 septembre This, that and more thingsIt's been a busy week, being the end of our accounting period. I haven't much time to surf around on the computer as usual.
Things are well at home. Today Eric is officially 1 year old (and with all the excitement when he woke up this morning I think he knows it too). We will have just a little cake with nana (eric has officially named me) and grandpa, mom and dad and Charlie and his "woman" (as he calls her) Jessica. I picked him up a cute little stuffed turtle that dances and sings like his red teddy bear he loves that sings "Sugar Pie Honey Bun." I will add those pictures to his birthday ones so check them out tomorrow.
Well, it's politics, politics and more politics in the newspapers lately. I used to enjoy my early morning paper and my coffee in the morning, but lately I just get aggravated. Why is that that politicians have to slander each other so much. To me it clouds the issues they are representing and most of it is so darn petty.
On the home front though, Charlie made the paper for his bowling last weekend (244 game for a 668 triple). Now bowling season is really in full swing. He is on the pro-scoring team this year as well, which means Sunday morning traveling as well as Saturday morning home games.
The first weekend in October is when I go and put my big Christmas layaway on at Walmart. It's mostly their underwear and such that I get them, as well as maybe new comforters and such. Sadly, yes, fall is here and winter is around the corner. I bet some of you want to shoot me for bringing up Christmas and snow already, huh?
Well not more more on the horizon for this week. I want to visit and see what's up with all of you. So - till later!
25 septembre Eric's Party Was GreatThe weather didn't cooperate in the early part of the day. But by 2:30 we were able to put up the bouncy bounce for the kids. They were getting a bit restless inside - with so many people space was at a minimum. Family, friends, lots of food, presents and cake - now how can you beat that?
We are having another little cake for Eric on Wednesday - his actual birthday. I kept trying to get pictures of the good stuff but kept losing my camera - then the battery died. But I can get more pictures on Wednesday.
I'm busy at work today so I can't write more. Take care everyone - will update more tomorrow!
23 septembre Party Time Sunday is Eric's 1st Birthday Party and today (Saturday) finds me doing more than my usual cleaning. You know, the kind of cleaning you do when your mother in law is coming over. I've shopped for Eric and will wrap his presents this morning. It is taking all my willpower not to give him his presents now. Nikki is planning the whole party - her first of many for the little guy. All I'm doing is cleaning, getting him presents and making a salad and wings. It feels funny not to be doing it all for one of my own little ones. But Nikki has alot of training over the years, watching me do parties for herself and her brothers.
It's raining here this morning which is ok - the weather for tomorrow is 80 degrees, humid and cloudy, but no rain in the forcast. We shall see, but so far having the party outdoors is looking good. Thank heaven because where will we put the bouncy bounce inside? Even if we do get a few showers, we can have the food inside and the fun stuff for
kids outside between showers. Kevin is taking care of the outside - mowing grass (and mowing some of the fallen leaves too) - and he is closing the pool this morning as we haven't really had a chance yet. Last week was the garage sale, and he couldn't drain it because all the garage sale things would have been soaked.
Ok - that's enough rambling out of me. I must get to work on this place while Eric is quiet. He is watching Nickolodian (sp?) and I have to keep an eye on him while Nikki and Charlie are at their Saturday morning bowling league. Of course when isn't someone in this family bowling (except moi of course).
I'll return Monday with details and pictures! BTW Hearts, did you make the donuts?
20 septembre Headaches, Coffee Makers and well...more headachesWhat do you think? When you are having a bad day do you want all things to happen just in that one day or would you like to have them spread out a little over a few days?
Well - Peachtree is finally back on (I agree with you Alien Hunter, Peachtree is the best Accounting Program out there). It turned out to be one of those busy days when everyone needed something - meanwhile, all I needed was peace and quiet to get everything from yesterday redone. Not to mention that Sales Tax is due (needs to be postmarked) today.
Alot of what I did yesterday concerned Tax Exempt Certificates and such. I had to go back in and re-delete the sales tax of people who sent their Exempt Certificates late. Remembering who they were was the hard part. The fact that they are still coming is is another.
Filter sales are big this time of year, as everyone is getting ready to turn on furnaces for the winter. Whenever I am not busy, I help to fill those orders. Well - our sales guys are now taking for granted that I am doing the filters, so they were bringing all those orders to me (and wondering why I was snarling at them).
The seal on the coffee maker melted and we had coffee all over the floor and counter. (Clean up person? moi, of course). So now, not only was there a huge mess, but we no longer have a coffee maker. (It's hot chocolate for me now Maura!)
I missed the mailman in trying to get todays invoices in the mail.
Still need to do the bank deposit and now go to the post office. And of course the government wants their sales tax NOW. Stupid sales tax....grrrrrrr.
Anyway, my co-work Scot said I should stop grumbling because -- if all my bad things happen today, I will have them all over with and tomorrow will be calm and peaceful. Ya think? Let's see what tomorrow brings.
Ok -sandwich is finished - lunch over. Hey - I saw this Winter Poem and I think it's the best piece of English literature I've seen in quite awhile.....try to memorize this poem by next December!
"WINTER"
"SHIT -- It's Cold!"
19 septembre Maybe I'll think of a title later...
##%&* Stupid Peacht ree Accouting Program broke down again. Now everything I did this morning, I have to redo.So how is everone else's day going? We had a nice weekend weatherwise - our garage sale went well. Otherwise it was quiet and peaceful. This week will be busy planning and shopping for Eric's first birthday party on Sunday. Hopefully we will be able to have it in the yard as we are planning to have a bouncy-bounce thing with balls in it for the kids. THEN....Nikki will be starting work on Monday and Eric will be going to Nursery School. He will be attending the same one that his Uncle . Charlie loved it and they still remember him there, even though he is 17 now. It will be quite hectic getting used to a new schedule, and since Nikki works till 5:00 and is all the way in Albany, I will be picking Eric up at 4:00 when I leave work. Nikki will have to get used to a new schedule. God Bless her - it won't be easy going from being with Eric all day to not being with him all day. I remember my experience with that very well. It's looking like we might be getting some thunderstorms shortly. Sky all gloomy and sort of foggy. Spooky really. Actually tonight would be a perfect Halloween night. Uh Oh - here comes the rain! I'm going to do some visiting because there really isn't much new going on. Take care and I'll talk to ya later! 15 septembre Rain, Rain, Go AwayWell it's clearing a little I suppose.
It's almost time to get the heck out of here and get on with the weekend.
While I was surfing around the spaces today as well as visiting friends, I noticed that some mentioned a SPACES Convention. I didn't know there was such a thing. How do people find out about things like that? I always thought that would be a great idea. A neutral place where we can meet fellow Spacers and friends some of us have probably known for many months or sometimes years.
I have to go find a banner for my Cancun trip as it is coming up fast. I have to admit I am a little nervous. What do I wear? I hope nothing fancy, as I am not a fancy type person. Jeans and tops are pretty much all you can find in my wardrobe. My job does not require skirts, or stocking or the like. Yes, I am the bookeeper/Secretary, but I am also a team player and can pitch in pulling orders and such, which is why I no longer wear dressy clothes. I enjoy dressing up on occasion, and must admit I am a knockout when I do -- *rolling my eyes here
I hope everyone has a great weekend. I'll try to pop in to say hello in between the garage sale, fall cleaning and shopping for groceries and Eric's birthday presents. Till later!
14 septembre Celebrating and Saying GoodbyeHave a great Day Charlotte!
It is pretty cloudy and chilly in Upstate New York today. Hmmm - remnants of Florence maybe? No matter, the weekend is "lookin good" for a change. Kevin will close up the pool and Nikki and I are having a garage sale. It will be nice to get rid of some of my junk and weed out some of the books I have. Nikki looked a little disappointed that I wasn't getting rid of all my books, just some. LOL! She must be tired of tripping over them, pickin them up or having them fall on her head when she opens a closet. (kidding - they don't fall on her head because I don't keep them in a closet).
I'm still trying to catch up on a week's worth of work - I should be done by the weekend so that will be free and clear of all thoughts of worrying about catching up.
I'm feeling a little unsettled today. Most of you know that we are a bowling family and my children's second home when growing up was the bowling alley a mile or so from our house. My husband and I also bowl in leagues there (although I'm not this year). We have met some wonderful people there, made lifetime friends. We know each others children and my children have spent their share of time helping run the bowling lanes or working the desk and kitchen.
A close friend who we have known for years from the bowling leagues, has passed away, victim of a sudden massive heart attack. He was in his early 50's. The news has pretty much shook up our bowling community. He was a wonderful friend to everyone and an active part of our community as well. I think when things like that happen so suddenly and unexpected, I get frightened. Reality stares me in the face and I cannot escape the feeling of fear I feel for my own loved ones. I go along about my day and all of a sudden something will make me remember and I can actually feel myself shy away from the thought that this has happened. What can anyone say to his family?
13 septembre Peachtree Works Again!11 septembre Remembering and SharingI cannot believe that there are people who have never heard of or had Apple Cider donuts. I guess I've been taking them for granted every fall. It is practically a ritual for everyone to head to the apple orchards and pick apples and drink cider and eat donuts. There sure isn't a shortage of apple orchards around here either. But before I share the receipe, I'd like to take a moment to remember September 11, 2001. As it's been said, everyone could remember exactly where they were when they heard of the attack.
I was the secretary at Eastern Parkway Church at the time. Pastor and I were getting ready for one of his meetings with 2 ladies from one of the programs our church was planning to support. I cannot remember which program, as the events that day took over most of my memory at the time. As I heard the church door open down the hall, and the ladies entering, my phone rang. It was a friend who was crying and telling me about the plane hitting the first tower. As I was speaking to her, Pastor came in and the two women. They stood and listened to my side of the conversation. Realizing what I was saying, Pastor turned on my radio and I hung up and we listened to the events unfolding that day. We then listened in shock as we heard about the second plane. By that time the Daycare Director at the church, who was also a good friend of mine, had entered the office. I honestly don't think any of us know what to say. Pastor went to the Library and wheeled back the television we had there. We watched, meeting forgotten.
Then the phone began to ring one call after the other. People wanting to talk with Pastor or with anyone. Elderly who were alone and frightened, mothers needing to know what to tell their little ones, my children calling saying how afraid they were about the planes. Young people, the elderly -- all calling for reassurance. People started coming into the church (some right from the street) asking if they could pray in the Sanctuary. It brings tears to my eyes even now to remember the many people who were afraid, who wanted to pray for loved ones, who wanted to pray for families of people lost. Between ministring to people in the Sanctuary and me handling phone calls, Pastor and I managed to put together a brief service for that evening and we activated the Telephone tree to let everyone we could know and to pass the word. The church was full that evening. My family and I gathered around the television to watch history being made, to answer my children's questions and to reassure each other we were ok. I mean as O.K. as anyone could be afterwards.
It so amazed me the people coming to the church in such numbers, praying and trusting that God would hear their prayers. It was a touching thing coming out of such tragedy. Below is my favorite picture of that time. I don't know why it's my favorite, only that it touches me each time I see it.
Now the long awaited Apple Cider Receipe -- Enjoy everyone!
Apple Cider Doughnuts
Ingredients 1 c apple cider 1 c sugar 1/4 c solid vegetable shortening 2 lg eggs 1/2 c buttermilk 3 1/2 c all-purpose flour 2 ts baking powder 1 ts baking soda 1/2 ts cinnamon 1/2 ts salt 1/4 ts nutmeg vegetable oil or shortening for frying GLAZE 2 c confectioners' sugar 1/4 c apple cider Instructions 1. Boil apple cider in small saucepan until it is reduced to 1/4 cup,8 to 10 minutes; cool. 2. Beat sugar with shortening until smooth. Add eggs and mix well, then add buttermilk and reduced cider. Stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg in another bowl. Add to liquid ingredients; mix just enough to combine. 3. Transfer dough to lightly floured board and pat to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut with 2 1/2- to 3-inch doughnut cutter; reserve doughnut holes and reroll and cut scraps. 4. Add enough oil or shortening to fill a deep pan 3 inches; heat to 375'F. Fry several doughnuts at a time, turning once or twice, until browned and cooked through, about 4 minutes. Remove to paper towels with slotted spoon. 5. For glaze, mix confectiners' sugar and cider. Dip doughnuts while warm; serve warm. (I don't put glaze on them -- when warm I shake in bag of regular sugar. But either way sounds yummy!) 8 septembre Whining? Nah...I can't figure out why I woke up with so much energy this morning (more than usual). By the time I left for work I had the entire day, evening and weekend planned. Thinking back on it now, I wondered what the hell I was thinking. No way am I going to get all the things done I was planning. I mean really - it's a weekend. I should be playing right? I mean - all my kids are grown up (Charlie is 17, but he is more adult than his father most of the time anyway). Shouldn't I be able to go out and let my hair loose once in awhile?
Maybe I will -- football Sunday is this weekend and I have my football sheet so maybe I will go to Center Field wi
th my hubby for their tailgate party. (Yes, I know Center field is baseball, but that's what they named it). Why didn't they name it Goal Post or End Zone if they have Football Tailgate Parties? Today is beautiful and the sun is out. Peachtree is still down and I have no work to do here. I've cleaned and overhauled the whole office trying to earn my pay. Shouldn't I have Friday afternoon off? Yes, Yes I should. Guess I'll just be grateful it's Friday.
All of the Applepicking places are running full force and I need get there before all the Apple Cider donuts are gone. I'm sure Nikki will go with me tomorrow morining. I can guilt her into it because she ditched me by not going to the gym with me 2 days in a row. I think one of them has baby animals and Eric will love them. You all should hear him babbling nowadays. And he has this great way of looking so innocent while he is getting into mischief. Anway - speaking of Apple picking - I must go visit Kathryn and let her know that it's Cider Donut time again. I'm sure she will be delighted to be reminded.
Well Everyone have a great weekend. I'm going to finish eating the crumbs out of the Potato Chip bag and see what everyone else is up to this weekend. I also need to check in on Kirian and Lehia (see post below). 6 septembre This That and Other ThingsLeilyn (my friend Melissa's daughter and friend Rhiane's sister)

CONGRATULATIONS THERESA ON YOUR NEW HOME!
I'M SO HAPPY FOR YOU!
I remember when we bought our house 10 years ago. It was our first house - all our own and we couldn't have been happier. Go see Theresa and congraulate her - she's so excited!
I still can't understand why all my Friends don't show up on my screen. It even says I have 17 Friends, but they don't all show. And when I hit the edit mode - different ones show up but not all. Only when I go into "edit Friends" mode do they all show. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I want all my Friends to show up! *pouting....
All right - now that that's out of the way. Today is not much different than yesterday. Our Accounting program (Peachtree) has been broken down since last Thrusday. My work is piling up and I've finished everything that I can do without the program. I'm cleaning files and cleaning out my desk. I guess that's a good thing because I usually don't have the time to do it otherwise. Or if it's in the afternoon and I have time, I don't have the motivation. I really am a morning person.
I need to make a few calls and do some more visiting. Since there really isn't much happening here I guess I'll get them done now. I really want to call and order some new candles - I'm all out and I am a candle nut. I think they make the house so cozy and smell so nice. I'm not much on the floral scents. I tend to lean toward fruity scents and food scents. Anyway - I'll say so long for now.
5 septembre I keep thinking it's Monday!Well, Labor Day is behind us and summer is nearly over. I'm hoping we will get a nice Indian summer though before the cold weather hits.
It was a nice weekend all in all. It rained Sunday morning, but tapered off by noon. And even though the sun never came out, it was nice enough to sit outside on the picnic table, eat some chicken and ribs and enjoy the company of my kids. Those are my best times, when they are all home at once. Once again, Jamie was able to make it home for his birthday (which was Sunday). So - what will September bring (other than fall cleaning and getting ready for the holidays)? GASP! Did I just say that? Holidays? Hush my mouth! We are also getting ready for Eric's First birthday party. I can hardly believe a year has gone by since he entered our lives. I can hardly imagine him not being around. I had to smile the other day. With all the kids home and Eric running around (via walker for now, but it won't be long till he is walking) and Nikki calling to Eric and I'm calling for one of the kids - oh - and I manage to call Charlie by Jaime's name a few times and Kevin by Charlie's name. I finally just ended up with "whatever your name is".... I can remember my grandmother doing that to my sister and I.. Anyway, it was quite a lively household once again. I do miss that sometimes….(key word being "sometimes"). I must get some work done. Here is a little something to make you smile. I just love the things kids say. Such common sense they have. Little Johnny's kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local Police Station. While they were there, they saw pictures tacked to a bulletin board of the ten most wanted criminals. One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person. "Yes", said the policeman. "The detectives want very badly to capture him." Little Johnny asked, "Why didn't you just keep him when you took his picture?" 1 septembre September AlreadyI find it unusual that I would rather make New Years Resolutions on September 1 rather than January 1st. I don't know if it has anything to do with raising kids and anticipating a new school year, or the beginning of a new season. Whatever the case may be, I have this urge to run home today and begin Fall cleaning, pull out all my Fall decorations (the pumpkins, the autumn scented candles, the fall wreath, tablecloth for the dining room) -- well you get the picture. I also have an urge to organize and clean out my desk and dig my shredder up from the basement to get rid of all the junk paper I have been saving, but never read. I mean I can throw piles of paper out and never miss what's there. I know this because I haven't touch the piles of paper since the beginning of the year. They are neatly stacked in a basket, waiting for God only know what. For me to throw them out I guess. Anyway, I cannot believe that the year is almost over. I'll blink and it will be Christmas. I can just see you all cringing now. No, really, I do love Christmas, it's just that I don't care much anymore for the snow and cold and I really hate to see time flying by so fast.
Anyway, I guess I'll do some visiting. Spaces has been very slow lately - either that or no one can handle the excitement of my blogs.
For a lot of people, Labor Day means two things: a day off and the end of summer.
But why is it called Labor Day?
Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women.
It has been celebrated as a national holiday in the United States and Canada since 1894
Here's wishing you all a wonderful Labor Day Weekend! Enjoy! |
